What’s the consensus?
Main title (uncredited) Written and performed by Ramin Djawadi. Let’s assume you’re reading these reviews and you haven’t seen GoT yet, but now that it’s over, you’re considering bingeing. In this case, the consensus is correct and is as follows: Seasons 1 through 6: exceptional. Deep world building, clever dialogue, epic Hollywood scenes, masterful acting, detailed plot, genuine surprises, great soundtrack used sparingly. GoT is definitely worth watching for these seasons.
There are inexplicable ideas, inconsistent characterizations, and soap opera drama
Season 7: Suddenly you notice that the quality of the writing and plotting has taken a nosedive. But at least the entertainment value is still very high, so that’s it. Season 8: This fall delves into depths you didn’t think were possible. The writing has become so amateurish that the production values, while still fantastic, are no longer enough to save it. If you’ve ever enjoyed Lost but were surprised by how bad the final season was, you’re in familiar territory.
Bad for fiction
The biggest problem with the final season was that it took us away from the story and forced us to wonder about its many weaknesses. We lost our suspension of disbelief. It also ruined the show’s plot to the point where rewatching the entire series is pointless. Would I recommend a Game of Thrones marathon to newcomers? Yes, the first 6 seasons are worth the disappointments later on.
But it’s not the greatest show of all time
It could have been, but its failure in the final stretch puts it behind the following top shows that are most deserving of a marathon: Battlestar Galactica (2003–2008) Twin Peaks (all 3 seasons plus the movie) Breaking Bad
